Racing
with two world champions.
With
the world championship being exclusively limited to 100
FSA, the FC European title became the most important sports
event for the 125 class in 2001. Gianluca Beggio was the
past season's world champion and guaranteed continental
success for Birel Motorsport. Francesco Laudato, another
world champion, was competing by his side. The driver
from Cava dei Tirreni was the past season's European champion
and was exclusively involved in the 125 class in 2001.
The 2001 turned out to be more difficult than expected
for Birel drivers, the hot favourites of the day before.

Unwitting
accomplice was the involvement of Birel technicians in
FSA, which indirectly slowed down development of engine
and chassis for FC, and the competitiveness of the CRG
team, both Beggio and Laudato's seasons did not live up
to expectations. Beggio won a place on the podium in the
first race in Corridonia, but did not manage to fight
back Alessandro Piccini, who won the 2001 followed by
Milton Ryttarbris and Gandolfi.
Beggio ended the season forth, while Francesco Laudato,
who gained points in all races, could only manage seventh
place..
