The
first kart chassis was made in a Birel workshop in 1959.
The product's potential was immediately understood by
Umberto Sala, former owner of a light carpentry company
in Lissone, which would be transformed over the next few
years into the first major kart chassis maker. Birel won
the first world championship trophy in 1967 and has won
on tracks world-wide ever since, gathering 25 championship
titles and countless other achievements at continental
and national levels.

Sporting
activities have always played a primary role for the Brianza-based
company. Races are used as a means to disseminate and
consolidate the trademark as well as to test the technical
solutions adopted in standard production on the spot.
1968 was a happy time for Birel in the world of car racing,
as it was the year their car driven by Vittorio Brambilla
won the Italian Formula 3 title. Birel became a limited
company in 1974. Aiming at constant organisational growth,
both in design and production, Birel started a new karting
promoting project by creating the 100 Cadets category
with the co-operation of IAME.

The
objective of approaching beginners to kart racing and
creating a learners' class was successful and the number
of practising karters increased significantly. The category,
in addition to feeding classes at more advanced levels,
trained the best Italian drivers, including the future
Kart World Champion and Formula 1 driver Riccardo Patrese.
Another successful business venture was to come in the
nineties: the Freeline range of kart accessories was created,
which came to be appreciated by many competitors too thanks
to the distinctive identity linked to Birel trademark
activities. Striving for constant development and setting
new objectives, Birel was the first major manufacturer
to build a specific chassis for four-stroke engines. Design
of the Birel four-stroke engine is at an advanced stage.
At the same time, Birel is fine-tuning the details for
starting up a two-stroke engine kart promotional category,
provisionally called Easykart.
The objective is to repeat the success of 100 Cadets in
a modern way. New involvement in car racing has also been
planned. Acquiring a share of a Formula Renault team and
consequently founding Birel Formula is the beginning of
a project which will combine Birel's being involved in
the promotional one-brand Easykart category, taking part
in all competitive karting championships and providing
an opportunity for car racing for the most promising drivers.
Today, Birel S.p.A. is the state-of-the-art company in
the sector, with over 5,000 square metres of facilities,
capillary distribution world-wide and over fifty employees. |
