2003 FORMULA A EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP - Angerville (France) – May 9th-10th- 11th, 2003

GATTO MISSES THE PODIUM BY AN HAIR’S BREADTH

A great balance characterized the first round of the Formula A European Championship. You have only to say that in the qualifying sessions there were 57 drivers in 5 tenths only, and during the race both Grooten (round 1) and Lammers (round 2) outdistanced the others with a lead of a few thousandths.

The first important competition of the international karting season, that is the opening race of the Formula A European Championship, was run on the French racing track of Angerville. Following the regulations issued by the International Federation, that cancelled in fact the 100 FSA World Championship and therefore the category itself, the 100 Formula A becomes the top class and the most important event of the world karting. That’s why a lot of titled drivers are present on the racing track, and they are competing in the whole continental season, in expectation of the world cycling round that the category will run in Sarno on October the 26th. Among the others, the names of Davide Forè, Marco Ardigò, Ben Hanley, Alessandro Manetti and Michael Ammermuller stand out, and all these drivers competed in the FSA category during the last season. The most prominent names are joined both by drivers who have already gained experience in the Formula A, such as Lammers, Gaggianesi and Gatto, and by other up-and-coming drivers coming from the Ica and Ica-Junior categories, such as the European champion in office Thonon, and also by Fanetti, Albuquerque and Hulkemberg. After the qualifying sessions the emergent drivers are Lammers, who gets his pole position with a time of 48’’.737, Nyman, who comes in second with a gap of 71 thousandths, Grooten and Ardigò, and this latter is the first Birel driver. Gatto, despite his 290 thousandths’ delay compared with Lammers, places himself in the 13th position, while some tyre problems slow down both Gaggianesi (18th position) and Fanetti (22nd position).

After the qualifying sessions the Belgian Bertrand Grooten is the driver, who can start his race for round 1 from the front position. De Brujin will sprint from the 2nd position, Marco Ardigò from the 3rd one, while the other Birel drivers will sprint from the 9th position (Gatto), from the 17th position (Fanetti), from the 20th position (Rohner) and from the 24th position (Gaggianesi) respectively. Unfortunately the young Australian driver Patrizi, who is making his debut with Birel team, can not qualify for the final due to some problems. Birel team places all expectations for round 1 in Marco Ardigò, but the driver from Brescia, after his very good qualifying sessions, goes wrong in his set-up, finding it difficult to be close behind the leading drivers. And after a race where the first 15 drivers arrived one after the other, he succeeds in placing himself in the 14th position, gaining 2 points valid for the results list. On the contrary the race of the Sicilian Gatto goes better and he gets to the chequered flag with the group including De Brujin, Renaudie and Forè, who sprints to compete for the 4th position, but finally he comes in 7th, gaining 9 points valid for the championship. Grooten is the winner and he precedes both Lammers and Westerhof. The young driver Michele Fanetti can not conclude his race because unfortunately he goes off the track. In round 2 the Dutch Lammers outdistances the recovering Forè, who is a little in the background until now, while Westerhof places himself in the 3rd position once again, because with a sprint he succeeds in preceding the very good driver Salvatore Gatto. Ardigò concludes his race during the first lap because of a bump, while Vega tyres, which prove to be less effective than Bridgestone covers, slow down the performance of Gaggianesi (14th position), Rohner (16th position), and Fanetti (26th position). The next appointment with the Formula A European Championship is scheduled for June the 8th in Finland.
