06/22/2003 - OPEN MASTER – CORRIDONIA
Laudato wins with one race still to go
The Birel driver takes the class 125 ICC title with
one race still to go, thanks to his 2nd place behind
teammate Profico. Coletti carries Birel colors to the
top of the podium in the Juniors as well, while Bollingoft
wins the 100 ICA and Hulkenberg the FA.
For Francesco Laudato, the last race of the Italian
Open Championship scheduled for Sarno will essentially
be a victory lap: the Birel driver won the 125 ICC title
with one race still to go, adding another important
prize to his collection. The Birel team proved itself
superior in every race in the 125 category, just as
it has in the rest of Europe, where Francesco Laudato
again seems to be the most likely candidate for the
title. As a perfect crown to the 125 ICC race in Corridonia,
there was also the success of Profico (Birel-Pavesi),
who beat Laudato himself to the finish line. Sferrella,
who finished third, will be battling Profico for second
place in Sarno. Birel colors also flew from the top
of the podium in the 100 ICA Junior, where the young
Monacan Stefano Coletti prevailed. Coming from behind
in a race that was all attack, the Birel driver finished
ahead of his teammate Nolè, Mancinelli and Birel
driver Clos, whose position at Corridonia gave him 4th
place in the general classification. Birel drivers were
not so fortunate in the 100 ICA, where the Danish Bollingtoft
finished first, ahead of Bressan and the fastest finishing
Birel driver, Perchtold. The top-ranking driver in the
Oakes classification only finished in 14th place, and
will have to postpone his ambitions for victory to the
last race, where he'll fight for the title itself with
the winner of the race in Corridonia. In the 100 FA
category, Hulkenberg had his first success of the season,
finishing ahead of Sauro Cesetti, whose points make
him the leader of the championship. Marino Spinozzi
finished in third place. The final race in the Italian
Open Championship is set for July 6 at the Sarno track.
