27/07/2003 - 125 SUPER ICC EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP
GANDOLFI AND LAUDATO SLOWED DOWN BY BAD LUCK
BIREL FAVOURITE DRIVERS BEFORE THE RACE HAVE
TO GIVE IN GOING OFF THE TRACK. BUT THEY ARE PENALIZED
FROM THE VERY BEGINNING BY AN EARLIER START OF SEVERAL
RIVALS NOT SANCTIONED BY THE RACE DIRECTION.
Those people who believe that good luck and bad luck
play a significant role in the world race as well had
a further demonstration about it in the past weekend
in Varennes during the second and last round of the
Super Icc European Championship. In France Gandolfi
and Laudato place themselves respectively in the 1st
and 2nd position in the Championship results list, and
they really possess the credentials to compete for the
title as lonely rivals. And these conditions are respected
up to the end of the qualifying sessions, when Birel
drivers gain the first positions at the starting grid.
But after the start of the first round at least 5 opponents
sprint earlier, slowing down both Birel drivers. In
any case their recovery arrives very soon and after
4 laps only they are able to keep close behind the first
drivers despite their 10th position after the 1st lap.
But unfortunately the slight hesitation showed by Benedetti,
when he gets out the little hairpin bend, causes a multiple
collision involving both Birel drivers. So Gandolfi
and Laudato have to say virtually goodbye to the title.
As a matter of fact at the end of the race Manetti places
himself in the 2nd position, that is after the surprise
driver Kozlinski.

The third step of the podium is occupied by a
new protagonist as well and his name is Kievitsbosh.
In round 1 Birel colours are defended by Robert
Dirks, who places himself in the 8th position.
In round 2 even the last hopes of winning fade
away for Birel drivers because Laudato is slowed
down by a frame problem, while Gandolfi can not
recover so much to cause anxiety to Manetti and
during the last lap he even goes off the track.
Both Birel drivers will have their opportunity
to recover very soon, that is during the only
round scheduled in Carole for the 125 Super Icc
World Championship. In round 2 Manetti is in the
right condition to control Kievitsbosh and Kozlinski
and, closing the race at the 3rd position, he
succeeds Francesco Laudato at the continental
title. Sauro Cesetti, thanks to his 6th position
in round 1, is now the European vice champion,
while Kievitbosh places himself in the 3rd position
in the Championship thanks to his victory gained
in round 2. Marco Ardigò closes round 2
with a good score as well and he goes on with
his apprenticeship with the 125 category in expectation
of the World Cup. But on the contrary the mastery
of Birel colours is unquestionable in the Icc
category: Cozzaglio wins both rounds, preceding
Bleek in round one, while in round two the third
step of the podium is occupied by Audigane. For
the Icc category the third and last round of the
European Championship is scheduled in Carole.
