Welcome to the official Birel S.p.A. website. In the name of Birel philosophy, which has always been targeted to customer service and technology, we have created a karting portal: the focus is on products, debates with engineers and drivers, reviews of tracks and information on the key issues of our sport. Birel is leader on the web, too.

2003 CIK-FIA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 100 F.A. Sarno (Italy), October 24th – 25th -26th, 2003

QUINTARELLI COMES IN FOURTH
THE 2003 EDITION OF THE KARTING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WAS CHARACTERIZED BY THE PRESENCE OF SOME DRIVERS WHO HAD ALREADY MADE A NAME FOR THEMSELVES IN THE MOTOR RACING. LIUZZI, PANTANO AND QUINTARELLI WERE AMONG THE MOST AWAITED PROTAGONISTS AND BIREL DRIVER PROVED TO BE THE BEST, WHILE CUNNINGHAM ATTAINED THE TITLE.

After two editions of the World Championship based on 5 rounds, the 2003 edition opted for a return to the past and so the title was awarded after one round only. The prestigious competition, which took place on the well-known Italian racing-track of Naples, was characterized by some rules which admitted basically all best drivers still active, including some guest stars as well. Among drivers still active who took part to the competition, in addition to the best specialists of the FA category such as the European Champion Lammers, we can also mention Hanley, Foré, Cesetti, and Birel team composed, among others, by Fanetti, Gatto, Gaggianesi, Catt, Heylen, Varutti, Sousa and Umegaki, and also by some very young drivers coming from the 100 Ica category. For example, this opportunity was exploited by Filippo Tedeschini (Birel-Tm) and by the European neo-champion Bocchi (Crg-Maxter). But these rules enabled also the companies to line up a team of drivers who did not contend in karting competitions during the current season. And so, among competitors we can mention the names of Pantano and Liuzzi, protagonists of the International Formula 3000, and Ronni Quintarelli, who is tied down in the Japanese Formula 3 for the current season and was signed on by Birel team just before this round.

As far as Birel colours are concerned, the specialist of the 125 category Francesco Laudato took part to the competition as well because he didn’t want to miss the opportunity of competing with the best drivers of the world on this home racing track. On the contrary Marco Ardigò of Birel team was forced to default at the end: the driver from Brescia was actually blocked by as sudden appendicitis attack. Of course, with this selected “parterre” the expectations for a great show were really very high and after the green light the protagonists did not fail to comply with them. Thanks to the competitiveness showed by some outsiders, who during qualifying sessions attracted the attention of the experts, the World Championship proved to be really open and fascinating. Among the outsiders, who joined rightly the drivers competing for the title since qualifying sessions, we can mention Ruben Carrapatoso, who attained the best time in trial, the Belgian Thonon, Claverie and Cunningham. Also the couple Pantano-Liuzzi, competing respectively for Intrepid and for Crg, and Birel driver Quintarelli proved once again to be very talented drivers and all of them qualified very well for the Final. There were other confirmations, for example by Renaudie, who won the prefinal and so attained his pole position in the official round for the title, and also by Hanley and Forè, who qualified close to the French driver of Pcr team. On the other hand Fanetti and Pineiro, who were out in the prefinal and forced to sprint from behind the lines in the Final, experienced a very unlucky weekend. And just one of the outsider before the competition was awarded the world cycling title: Grant Cunningham. Both Pantano and Liuzzi didn’t see the chequered flag because of some problems, as well as the French Renaudie, who was stopped by the engine breakdown when he was leading. Ben Hanley came in 2nd , preceding Thonon and Quintarelli, and this latter at the end of the competition was just one step from the podium.
