Welcome to the official Birel S.p.A. website. In the name of Birel philosophy, which has always been targeted to customer service and technology, we have created a karting portal: the focus is on products, debates with engineers and drivers, reviews of tracks and information on the key issues of our sport. Birel is leader on the web, too.

2003 CIK-FIA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 100 F.A. - Sarno (Italy), October 24th – 25th -26th, 2003

REPORT ON THE ROUNDS
TIMES AND QUALIFYING SESSIONS

Drivers contend for the times in two sessions of 10 minutes each on Saturday morning. So the weekend gets officially to the heart of the competition and finally the first merits on the track are completely expressed. The surprise result of qualifying sessions is the Brazilian Ruben Carrapatoso, who proves to be the quickest driver, preceding the Belgian Jonathan Thonon. But the most evident detail emerging from qualifying sessions is that all big drivers attained similar times, with leads of a few thousands of a second only, and so all of them are in the right position to compete for a very good world championship. Liuzzi and Pantano have a very good performance and they join the top ten drivers, while Ronnie Quintarelli, despite his delay of 3 thousands of a second only, has to accept the 14th position. The competition programme goes on with qualifying sessions. The over 100 competitors are divided into 8 groups which will contend for 12 qualifying sessions between Saturday morning and Sunday morning. Penalties are assigned according to the position attained during the different rounds (for example 0 penalty for the winner, 1 penalty for the driver who comes in 2nd, 2 penalties for the driver who come in 3rd and so on).

The first 28 drivers, who have rightly qualified for the World Final, are selected according to the results obtained on Sunday morning at the end of the rounds. Among them the names of Thonon, Renaudie and Pineiro emerge, who attain the first positions with the lower number of penalties. The best Birel driver is Fanetti, while Quintarelli is slowed down by some problems during the last round. Liuzzi and Pantano are also slowed down by some problems and both of them have more penalties than Quintarelli. On the other hand the last 6 positions for the World Final are assigned through a “repechage” round involving the first 34 drivers excluded after qualifying sessions, while for all other drivers the World Championship is basically over. For some drivers this happens against all expectations, as in the case of Davide Gaggianesi of Birel-Mgm team: his engine breaks down during qualifying sessions and, sprinting from a rear position, he is involved twice in a scrimmage behind the lines.
