Welcome
to the official Birel S.p.A. website. In the name of Birel philosophy,
which has always been targeted to customer service and technology,
we have created a karting portal: the focus is on products,
debates with engineers and drivers, reviews of tracks and information
on the key issues of our sport. Birel is leader on the web,
too. |

9TH WINTER CUP LONATO – FEBRUARY 14TH /15TH, 2004
MUSTONEN IS LEADING AGAIN
THE FINNISH DRIVER OF MGM TEAM REPEATS THE SUCCESS OBTAINED
IN SARNO IN THE ICA. BIREL DOMINATES THE JUNIOR AS WELL.
The 9th edition of
the Winter Cup was run on the racing-track of Sarno,
which is one the classical appointments scheduled at
the beginning of the season as ideal place to make a
test in consideration of the international competitions.
And traditionally, as far as drivers and manufacturers
were concerned, a top-class “parterre” was
present. Birel Motorsport, which opted for the Manufacturers’
Cup in Sarno scheduled at the beginning of the month,
did not take part to the competition with its drivers,
but Birel colours were represented by all Junior teams,
among which MGM structure of Mario Pozzi focused the
attention of everybody. The Lombard event is reserved
for the 100 classes and so three rounds were run: Junior,
Ica and Formula A. Among very young drivers of the Junior
category Ruggeri draws attention to himself, but Birel
drivers step on to the 2nd and 3rd position of the podium,
gained respectively by the English Lee and by the Spanish
Campos. The most favourite driver Coletti is out just
after 10 laps, while during qualifying round he was
placed 8th and Kronemberg, who gained a 4th absolute
very good position during qualifying rounds, is dogged
by misfortune as well. In the 100 ICA category Atte
Mustonen repeats the success obtained in Sarno and is
ready to become a leading driver for the international
season. Another Finnish driver comes in 2nd: Simo Puhakka.
The Ukrainian champion Chukanov gains a very good 10th
position, while Bosca and Lancaster encounter some problems
during the race despite their very good performances
during qualifying rounds. Ben Hanley, who precedes Kozlinski
and Tonon, is the winner of the Formula A. Gary Catt
(6th) comes in 1st among Birel drivers and precedes
Metkafle, who obtained the 5th position during trial
timings.
The sporting date is now deferred to February 29th with
the 1st round of the Open Italian Championship.

With Waldschmidt, Todisco and Annunziata they
will be the protagonists of a very spectacular
Final. Walschmidt is the first driver to cross
the chequered flag, but after a check he will
be excluded for underweight problems. So the winner
is the good Finnish driver Mustonen who precedes
Annunziata and Risitano. Sauro Cesetti, whose
debut with Birel is eagerly awaited in FA, shows
immediately his good feeling with this new team
in the qualifying rounds already. Also during
the rounds Cesetti is always placed with the first
3 drivers and a good result is expected for the
Final. But unfortunately his race is over only
after 5 laps and so the Sebastiani brothers, Nyman,
Teemu and Michele Fanetti are the only drivers
competing for the title. Valentino Sebastiani,
supported by his brother (who will be excluded
from the race just for this reason) attains a
slight lead during the first phases of the race
and the followers have only to be satisfied with
the remaining positions. Nyman will attain the
2° position, preceding De Brujin and Fanetti.
The multi-titled driver Laudato is familiar with
the 125 Icc category and he doesn’t miss
the success. Sferrella keeps close behind him,
attaining the second position, while Kievstbosch
comes in 3°. At the end of the month, with
the first race of the Italian Open Championship,
all drivers will have to confirm once again their
talent and the long 2004 season will get to the
heart of the competition.
