Welcome to the official Birel S.p.A. website. In the name of Birel philosophy, which has always been targeted to customer service and technology, we have created a karting portal: the focus is on products, debates with engineers and drivers, reviews of tracks and information on the key issues of our sport. Birel is leader on the web, too.

03/03/2002 - ITALIAN OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP - LONATO (BS) - LAUDATO AND FANETTI WIN THE FIRST RACE

The first race in the renewed Italian Open Championship which took place on Sunday March 3, at Lonato, was very positive for the Birel colours. Under this year's new name, Open Masters, the top Italian championship is one of the most important appointments of the season. Four categories raced in Lonato, of which two were the prerogatives of Birel drivers.

The Italian Karting Federation are coming out with plenty of innovations for the new Open Championship: live broadcasts aired by Rai Sat, the introduction of rich prizes and a single final for all races. These are only some of the innovations which will enhance this championship that already featured some of the most important international karting stars.

Italy is the fulcrum of world karting thanks to the presence of the world's major manufacturers and naturally the national championship involved the most prestigious manufacturers and the most important drivers. Imposing oneself in the Open is therefore important in view of international events. Four categories were admitted: 100 ICA Junior, 100 Ica, the 100 FA and the 125 ICC. Birel Motorsport will be directly involved in all categories in the five events of the 2002 season. Birel's three 100 Junior drivers with the most potential are: Marco Mapelli, last year's vice-champion, Filippo Tedeschini and Andrea Todisco.

The best result was obtained Mapelli in Lonato, who came home sixth followed by Todisco. The category was won by current category champion Niko Hulkemberg. In 100 ICA, the promising Michele Fanetti had a wonderful win leading the sprint in front of Monegasque Cirillo and Stefano Albertini. Birel also excelled in the 125 ICC class, where former world champion Francesco Laudato dominated the scene coming home in front of Torsellini and Elkmann.

The 100 FA category was won by Guignet driving for the French team Tony Kart, while Salvatore Gatto, newly acquired by the Birel team, ended the race in 9th position due to problems with trim..
