06/12/2002 - WORLD FSA CHAMPIONSHIP IN MARIEMBOURG (B) - BIREL MOTORSPORT STEPS ON THE PODIUM

The first weekend of the FSA Word Championship ended up in a positive outcome for Birel Motorsport.

The first weekend of the FSA Word Championship ended up in a positive outcome for Birel Motorsport. In Mariembourg, during the first of the five scheduled competitions, Gianluca Beggio came in third during trial 2. The winner of both races was Alessandro Manetti of the CRG team that amazed all experts with their effective tyres. As a matter of fact Manetti and his team-mate Bressaglia are the only pilots equipped with Dunlop. And tyres were really a decisive factor in Belgium and they allowed the CRG pilot to win both competitions and to be successful twice in qualifier rounds as well. On the contrary a considerable balance emerged among Bridgestone pilots and both in qualifier rounds and during races their gaps were always slight. During the trial Ronnie Quintarelli of the Birel team succeded in getting his pole position and his team-mate Gianluca Beggio came in third. On the contrary Marco Ardigò was slowed down by some trim problems, like the French pilot Laurent Groppi. During qualifier rounds some tyre debris knocked Beggio's and Ardigò's engines out, causing some problems to Quintarelli as well. So the round result was endangered compared to expectations, with Quintarelli ranking second, Beggio fifth and with Ardigò and Groppi forced to start the race behind the lines.

RACE 1

The Dutch pilot Van der Garde and the British pilot Ben Hanley, sprinting from the first position, lead the group during the first part of the race heading Quintarelli, Asmer, Gandolfi, Beggio and Marinetti. After the first laps Marinetti, who was the fastest pilot in the morning during warm-up, makes up ground ranking third after Van der Garde and Asmer. Quintarelli is outstripped by Beggio but the group of the fastest pilots is still solid and they keep on racing recording the same times. During the second half of the race Manetti is the only pilot who is able to take the lead, keeping this position up to the finishing line. The former world cycling champion Davide Forè and Sauro Cesetti, expected to become protagonists on the eve of the race, can not stand the pace of the leaders coming in respectively ninth and tenth. Marko Asmer of the Tony Kart team steps on to the second step of the podium and Van der Garde of the CRG team comes in third. Birel pilots, Quintarelli and Beggio, come in fifth and sixth, while Marco Ardigò, making up ground from the twentififth position, is able to reach the score zone.
