Welcome to the official Birel S.p.A. website. In the name of Birel philosophy, which has always been targeted to customer service and technology, we have created a karting portal: the focus is on products, debates with engineers and drivers, reviews of tracks and information on the key issues of our sport. Birel is leader on the web, too.

11/08/2002 - QUINTARELLI IS STILL LEADING THE GENERAL RESULTS LIST

Even though the away game in Portugal turned out to be not especially lucky for the two Birel teams competing in the World Championship, Ronnie Quintarelli is still leading the driver results list and, as far as the manufacturer list is concerned, Birel Spa and Birel Motorsport are still placed respectively in the first and in the second position. Giedo Van der Garde (Crg) and Michael Ammermuller (Tony Kart) were the winners of the races run in Portugal.

The conditions of the racing track, that is very slippery, cause some problems to the Birel drivers who have difficulties in finding the best set-up both during trials and in qualifying rounds. Laurent Groppi attains the eighth position and he is the only one who is able to become part of the "top ten" drivers at the starting grid. Marco Ardigò will sprint from the eleventh position thanks to a spectacular accident occurred with Davide Forè during one round. The Tony Kart driver was not able to start the race regularly because of carburettor trouble and he was also bumped by Ardigò who could not avoid the collision. Luckily both drivers did not suffer any physical consequences and they could regularly take part in the competitions. But, from a physical point of view, the one who was not all right was Ronnie Quintarelli, leader of the driver general results list. A bad pain in his ribs compromised the weekend of the driver from Veneto who attained however the thirteenth position at the starting grid during finals. Gianluca Baggio will sprint from the twelfth position.

The Crg driver Maxter Giedo Van der Garde is the winner of the first finals, heading Ammermuller and Van Dam who compete for the third position almost in the final sprint. Ronnie Quintarelli, first among Birel drivers and able to hold out against the attacks launched by a very good Forè going up again from behind the lines, places himself in the fourth position. John Byrne attains the sixth position, heading Gianluca Beggio who runs a good race after having experienced many problems during the rounds. At the end of the first finals Sauro Cesetti places himself in the eighth position, heading Manetti and Niogret. World cycling points are scored neither by Groppi, leaving the racing track when there are still three laps to go to the end of the competition, nor by Marco Ardigò who can not start the race because of a technical problem. Asmer of the Tony Kart team and Ben Hanley, promising driver at the beginning of the season, score no points as well. In race two Van der Garde, Ammermuller and Van Dam are still competing for the first position. Thanks to his great resolution Quintarelli can come close to them, competing with Niogret. But when there are still five laps to go to the end of the competition officials stop the Birel driver because of the detachment of the chain guard. This stop costs Quintarelli more than 10 world cycling points but, thanks to Ammermuller who can beat Van der Garde attaining the second finals in Portugal, the colour bearer of the Birel Spa team is still leading the championship, even though together (85 points) with the Dutch driver of the Crg team. During the second finals Carlo Van Dam attains the third step of the podium, heading Niogret, Manetti and Laurent Groppi, first among Birel drivers. Gianluca Beggio attains the ninth position and in particular 7 world cycling points consolidating his fourth position in the championship. Marco Ardigò concludes trial two in the thirteenth position. During the championship, after the couple Quintarelli - Van der Garde, Manetti goes up again attaining the third position with 67 points, so with 4 points more than Beggio heading in turn both Van Dam, who reaches 56 points, and also the three Tony Kart drivers Asmer, Ammermuller and Forè, who score respectively 55, 53 and 49 points. The fourth event of the FSA Word Championship is scheduled in Salbris, France, on next September 8th.
