Welcome to the official Birel S.p.A. website. In the name of Birel philosophy, which has always been targeted to customer service and technology, we have created a karting portal: the focus is on products, debates with engineers and drivers, reviews of tracks and information on the key issues of our sport. Birel is leader on the web, too.

08/25/2002 - CRG DRIVERS JOHNATAN THONON AND SÈBASTIEN BUEMI ARE THE NEW EUROPEAN CHAMPIONS OF THE 100 ICA AND 100 ICA JUNIOR CLASSES

Performances given by Birel drivers Erik Janis and Michele Fanetti, expected to be protagonists respectively of Junior and Ica categories, are not very successful.

Birel placed great expectations in the European finals of the 100 Ica and 100 Ica / Junior classes after the selections made last June, when drivers of the company of Lissone had the opportunity of drawing attention to themselves. And the competitiveness of go-karts and of Birel drivers was also confirmed on the French racing track of Angerville, where the final was played but, considering that a final in single trial is a sort of sentence without appeal, even good luck and circumstances can play an essential role. Michele Fanetti, winner of the selections of the Ica category made in Corridonia, was at the top of all expectations and in the Junior category too all makings were very reassuring thanks to Filippo Tedeschini, who came in second during the selections and to Erik Janis, European champion in office and still competing for his title. Unfortunately Birel drivers got much less than expected, especially Michele Fanetti, who came in only twelfth at the finishing line, after having placed himself even in the second position at the beginning of the race.

After qualifying trials concerning the propaedeutic category of the 100 class, Crg drivers Buemi and Hulkemberg, attaining respectively the first and second time, turn out to be immediately the drivers one have to beat. But Birel drivers are very competitive as well, with the Belgian Van Den Heuvel in the third position, Alessandro Bosca in the fifth, the champion in office Erik Janis in the tenth, Risitano in the thirteenth, Cassaignes in the sixteenth and finally Filippo Tedeschini in the seventeenth position. After qualifying rounds the leading driver is the Dutch Henk Waldschmidt of the Top-Comer team and thanks to his four successful rounds out of five he can attain his "pole" position at the starting grid for the pre-final. Nico Hulkemberg will sprint beside him, while Buemi and Herck place themselves in the second row. On the contrary Tedeschini and Cassaignes will sprint respectively from the fourth and fifth position, while Alessandro Bosca, who gave a very good performance in the rounds, qualifies for the thirteenth position because of his penalization due to an early start occurred during the second round. Without this penalization the Italian driver of the Birel team would have sprinted from the second row. Janis too is very unlucky during rounds and, besides being penalized by a stop due to the breakage of the sparking-plug cable, he has some set-up problems as well: at the starting grid for the pre-final he will start from the seventeenth position. And during the pre-final the Swiss driver Buemi stands out once again, heading Waldschmidt. Cassaignes (eighth position) is leading among Birel drivers, while Tedeschini is slowed down by a wrong set-up choice and at the end of the race he will place himself in the eighteenth position only. Bosca, who is out after the first lap because of a technical problem, and Van Den Heuvel too will sprint from behind the lines during the final. Just after the beginning of the final Buemi is leading the race and so Waldschmidt, Hulkemberg and the Tony Kart driver Bollingtoft can only compete for the second and third position. Tedeschini and Janis are able to make up for their positions coming close to the leading drivers, but the Czechoslovakian driver can not finish the race because of the breakage of the clutch. On the contrary Tedeschini is involved in a scrimmage to the death with the Swiss woman driver Gachnang, with Chinosi and Bosca and due to an accidental contact he finishes the race placing himself in the fourteenth position. Sèbastien Buemi becomes the European champion of the category, while Waldschmidt and Bollingtoft place themselves respectively in the second and third position.
