  09/22/2002 - 2002 CIK-FIA EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP FA-ICC-SICC - LAUDATO IS THE EUROPEAN CHAMPION

Francesco Laudato attained in Mariembourg the European title of the class 125 Super Icc. The couple Birel - Tm is successful once again during the top competition of the 125 category. Birel drivers stand out even in the Icc category: Dirks is the winner and Viani comes in second. In Fa the driver Hemkemeyer attains unexpectedly the title.

The rain fallen on Sunday characterised the last competition of the European championship of 125 Icc, 125 Super Icc and 100 Fa classes. So the results obtained on the racing track were heavily modified by the tyre performance. The rain covers used in Belgium by Bridgestone proved much more effective if compared with Vega's, determining an unexpected result in the Fa class. Even sidesteps proved essential to the award of the three titles and in particular they allowed Francesco Laudato to attain the second continental title of his carreer.

» RACE 1

After the qualifying round Francesco Laudato comes in only 11th following two unsuccessful rounds due to his little effective starts and to one stop imposed by the officials because of the detaching of the front nose. Elkmann attains the pole position for the final, heading Laurent Groppi who places himself in the first row dominated by Birel drivers. Piccini sprints from the second row, Forè places himself in the 7th position and Cesetti in the 9th. When the race starts the racing track is wet and, after the first part of the race with Elkmann, Groppi and Piccini heading the group, both Cesetti and Laudato recover attaining the first positions. The Tony Kart driver Ammermuller runs a good race too: at the finishing line he places himself in the second position, headed by the good winner Cesetti and in turn he also heads Laudato, who comes in third. Groppi places himself in the 4th position, while Piccini comes in fifth, having a wide gap.

RACE 2

When the race starts Palmieri sprints before time from the central group, attaining the second position. Laudato does not start very well and he is forced to chase the others. On the wet racing track Cesetti is invincible once again, and Forè and Groppi make a good performance too. At the finishing line Cesetti comes in first, while Palmieri attains the second position, with an over 2" lead. Laudato comes in third and the winner outdistances him with 11". But the race management rightly imposed a10" penalty on Palmieri due to his early start and Laudato, thanks to his second position, becomes the European Champion of the Super Icc class in 2002. At the end of the championship Cesetti scores the same points as the driver from Cava dei Tirreni, but due to worse partial placings he comes in second. Laurent Groppi attains the fourth position, while Forè comes in fifth, heading Piccini.
