Welcome to the official Birel S.p.A. website. In the name of Birel philosophy, which has always been targeted to customer service and technology, we have created a karting portal: the focus is on products, debates with engineers and drivers, reviews of tracks and information on the key issues of our sport. Birel is leader on the web, too.

2002 OPEN MASTERS - MICHELE FANETTI IS CHAMPION OF THE 100 ICA.

The Birel driver from Brescia attained in Muro Leccese the Open Masters title for the 100 Ica class, which is the propaedeutical category par excellence. Michele, after a season always at the top of the results list, attained on the Apulian racing track both the first position and the title, proving to be one of the most promising drivers of the National Karting. Niko Hulkenberg wins again the competitions for the 100 Ica / Junior categories, Guignet attains the title in the FA class, while Piccini comes in first in the 125 Icc class.

Michele Fanetti is at his best on the Apulian racing-track and he is ready to recover the bad day experienced in Angerville during the European final. The rivals for the title, except Thonon, are the same drivers who competed for the continental final. The Portuguese Albuquerque and Mortara are still competing for the title and during the race they prove to be the most fearful rivals for the Birel driver. But Fanetti does not make any mistake during the last competition of the prestigious Open Masters Championship and he attains a valuable victory over Albuquerque. The Tony Kart driver Bossini places himself in the third position, heading Mortara and Iglesias.

In the 100 Junior class there is also an air of revenge as to the results of the European competition in Angerville. As a matter of fact in France the Swiss Buemi was the leading driver, while his rival, the German Hulkenberg, attained both the victory on the Apulian racing-track and the title of the Open Masters. So the Crg competitor confirms once again his title attained last year, standing as future leading driver in the upper categories. The Swiss Buemi has to be satisfied with the place of honour both in the competition and in the Championship. Unfortunately the Birel drivers, competing in the Junior category, were down on their luck during the season just concluded. After the victory attained by Todisco in the Margutti trophy, the expectations were certainly higher, even though Tedeschini, Bosca, Mapelli and Todisco himself have often drawn attention to themselves.

» 100 FA

The French Guignet and the Dutch driver of the Trulli Kart team Carlo Van Dam were the favourites competing for the title. According to the points scored by the Birel drivers, Gatto and Gaggianesi were not excluded from the competition as well, even though they certainly had poor chances of success after their very unlucky season. In particular Davide Gaggianesi has a matter to settle with the blind goddess, who forced him this year as well to get less results compared to the potential shown on the racing-track. During the competition of the 100 FA class, just to make it extremely interesting, many leading drivers attending the World Championship were also present and, in expectation of the next world cycling competition scheduled for October 27th, they availed themselves of this opportunity to test materials and set-ups. Marco Ardigò of the Birel team, Davide Forè, Ammermuller and Asmer of the Tony Kart team, Van Der Garde and many others are among the "guest stars" taking part in the competition. As a matter of fact they will be the protagonists at the finishing line and all of them will step on to the podium: Forè comes in first, heading Ammermuller and Ardigò. But thanks to his 4th position the winner is Jan Philippe Guignet, who beats the rival Carlo Van Dam, who does not conclude his race, scoring no points in the results list. Salvatore Gatto attains a very good 5th position and he comes in third in the Championship.

Alessandro Piccini attains both the competition and the title in Muro Leccese. Due to little set-up problems the newly appointed European champion Francesco Laudato has to be satisfied with the third position, headed by the team-mate Elkmann. This latter, thanks to his score, heads the driver from Cava dei Tirreni in the championship as well. Another Birel driver, Manuel Cozzaglio, places himself in the 4th position during the competition, while Cesetti comes in 5th, attaining the fourth position in the championship.
