Welcome
to the official Birel S.p.A. website. In the name of Birel philosophy,
which has always been targeted to customer service and technology,
we have created a karting portal: the focus is on products,
debates with engineers and drivers, reviews of tracks and information
on the key issues of our sport. Birel is leader on the web,
too. |

CIK FIA FSA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP - MURO LECCESE (I)
» FINAL 2- FORMULA SUPER A
Van der Garde faces the final competition of the World
Championship having an unexpected advantage before the
race. Quintarelli, for his part, has nothing to lose and
he must only try to obtain the best possible position.
At the starting grid the couple Forè - Cesetti
are still leading, followed by Van Dam, Quintarelli and
Van der Garde. As a matter of fact Quintarelli, who can
sprint from the inner row, outstrips Van der Garde, dashing
off in pursuit of the leading drivers. But after the third
lap the Dutch driver of the CRG team attacks the Birel
driver, attaining again the fourth position.

As in the first final Van der Garde, who seems stronger
than his opponents, makes a bid for the first position.
First he outstrips Van Dam, then Cesetti and finally Forè.
In the meantime Cesetti progressively loses ground and
both Van Dam and Quintarelli outstrip him. Among competitors
the driver from Brescia Ardigò draws attention
to himself once again, getting close to the leading drivers
and dragging his teammate Groppi as well. Five laps before
the end of the race Van der Garde attains stably the first
position, while behind him Forè, Van Dam and Ammermuller
compete to the death to climb back to the top. At the
beginning of the last lap the scrimmage among the three
drivers ends up in a touch involving Van Dam and Ammermuller.
They are both forced to withdraw from the competition,
giving up the third step of the podium to Ronnie Quintarelli,
who was behind them. Cesetti comes in fourth, while Ardigò
and Groppi attain respectively the 5th and 6th position.
Palmieri places himself in the 7th position, heading Bakker,
Burton and Bressaglia. Giedo Van der Garde is the World
Champion for the year 2002, succeeding his teammate Liuzzi.
However the balance of the season remains positive for
Ronnie Quintarelli, as underlined by his own words: "Before
this championship my expectations were certainly not so
rosy. I returned to the world of karting after one year
spent with racing cars and many things needed a breaking-in
period in order to run for the best. Despite all this
we have headed the championship till today, being successful
on all racing tracks and under all conditions. For this
reason the balance of our season remains certainly positive,
even though it is difficult to accept losing the title
during the last trial. I am also sorry for the team, which
deserved to be successful following the considerable work
performed this year. Unfortunately the problem occurred
during the first final overturned the situation we had
before the race, and in the second trial only a miracle
could bring us into play again. But, as we all know, races
are like that
