CIK-FIA EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP FA/S-ICC/ICC – VARENNES
[ROUND 2]
THE 2ND
RACE OF FORMULA A IS ANNULLED
THE SENSATIONAL MEASURE IS TAKEN
FOLLOWING THE MISTAKEN DISPLAY OF THE RED FLAG BY THE REFEREES
AND THEIR SUBSEQUENT CHANGE OF MIND.
Sensational measures by Cik in
relation to the 2nd race of Formula A held at Varennes. Following
Ardigò’s victory in Race 1, the 2nd race actually
produced two ‘virtual’ winners: Forè won
at the finishing line, whereas Ardigò won following
the decision to close off the tables 4 laps from the end.
It all happened because of just a few raindrops which, in
the final phases of the race, caused quite a few problems
among the referees: two laps from the end, the Referee in
fact displayed the red flag just when Ardigò, in the
lead, was being attacked by the French driver, Kozlinski,
and the British, Christosoulou. Forè took advantage
of the scrimmage to pass into the lead but then, instead of
interrupting the race and making the karts go back to the
closed park, the referee signalled one lap to the end; in
the next lap, the referee waved the chequered flag in front
of Forè, as if the race had ended regularly.
At first, however, Ardigò and not Forè was thought
to be the winner as the order of arrival had been considered
to be that of the lap preceding the display of the red flag.
Then, because of the confusion surrounding the arrival procedure,
in which there was total contradiction between the red flag
(immediately stopping the race, therefore granting victory
to Ardigò) and the chequered flag (signalling victory
to Forè) the CIK was obliged to take the sensational
decision of annulling the race. As far as the championship’s
tables are concerned, therefore, there are only 5 races instead
of 6, and the best 4 rather than the best 5 results will be
taken into consideration.
